How Is Your Daily Calorie Target Calculated? BMR, Activity, Goals, and Apple Health
A daily calorie target is a chain of assumptions, not a number measured by the app. Here is the exact Food Focus calculation and why today's target can move.
What is the difference between a base calorie target and today's target?
Food Focus keeps a saved base calorie target and then calculates the target displayed for the selected day. The base comes from your profile or a value you edit. Today's target can change when current active calories are available and when optional calorie carryover applies.

Separating the two explains why a number can change during the day without the profile itself changing. It also prevents a common misunderstanding: the moving number is an app budget assembled from estimates, not a direct measurement of how much food your body requires.
How does Food Focus estimate resting energy?
When Food Focus does not have an eligible Apple Health resting-energy value, it estimates resting energy with the Mifflin–St Jeor equation. The calculation uses current weight, height, an age value derived from the selected age bracket, and the selected male or female profile option.
- Male profile: 10 × weight in kilograms + 6.25 × height in centimeters − 5 × age + 5.
- Female profile: 10 × weight in kilograms + 6.25 × height in centimeters − 5 × age − 161.
The original Mifflin–St Jeor study (opens in a new tab) derived a predictive resting-energy equation from 498 healthy adults aged 19 to 78. A formula result is therefore a population-based estimate, not a metabolic test and not proof of one person's actual daily expenditure.
Food Focus currently applies an internal minimum of 1,500 kcal to a male-profile base calculation and 1,200 kcal to a female-profile base calculation. Those are product guardrails. They must not be interpreted as universally safe or sufficient intakes for every adult, and they are not individualized clinical recommendations.
How does the selected activity level affect the base target?
Without Apple Health enabled, Food Focus adds a fixed activity estimate to resting energy. This is an additive product model rather than the physical-activity-level multiplier used by some other calculators.

Choose the category that best reflects a typical routine rather than the most active day you can remember. Its model is not the Food Focus formula and does not validate a Food Focus result.
How do goals and weight-loss pace change the calorie target?
After estimating resting energy and, when applicable, adding the profile activity amount, Food Focus applies a fixed adjustment for selected goals. Weight-loss pace appears only for the lose-weight goal.

Target weight does not directly change the Food Focus calorie formula or calculate a date for reaching that weight. The app currently uses the midpoint between current and target weight when calculating parts of the macro target. That is different from predicting how body weight will change over time.
The CDC describes gradual, steady weight loss as more sustainable for many people and notes that medicines, health conditions, stress, genes, hormones, environment, and age can affect weight management. How does Apple Health change the Food Focus target?
Apple Health integration is available on a compatible iPhone, not Android. Food Focus requests read access to active energy and basal energy; it does not write either value. When connected, the app stops adding the fixed profile activity allowance so that current active energy is not layered on top of that same general activity estimate.

Read resting energy when available
Food Focus reads basal energy from the previous 24 hours. It uses that value for a recalculated base only when the reading is at least 1,000 kcal; otherwise it falls back to the profile equation.

Build the base without the profile activity allowance
The selected goal adjustment and the internal profile floor still apply, but the fixed 200–1,000 kcal activity amount does not.

Add current-day active energy
Food Focus sums available active energy from local midnight to the current time and adds that number to the displayed calorie target.
Apple defines active energy (opens in a new tab) as energy burned through physical activity and exercise, separate from resting energy (opens in a new tab). Both remain estimates in this context. How does optional calorie carryover work?
Calorie carryover is off by default. It is currently a Pro feature and becomes effective after the account has at least 10 regular meal logs. When enabled, Food Focus checks only yesterday. If yesterday had logged meals and calories exceeded yesterday's adjusted target, the app subtracts that overage from today's calorie target, capped at 40% of the saved base target.
- Only yesterday is checked. Older overages do not accumulate into a multi-day debt.
- Only an overage carries. Being on target or below target does not add unused calories to today.
- The deduction is capped. The most removed is 40% of the base calorie target.
- It applies only to today. Opening a past date does not retroactively apply today's carryover.
- It changes the calorie budget, not the configured macros. Protein and fat stay at their saved values, and carryover does not reduce the carb target. Fiber, added-sugar, and saturated-fat targets are recalculated from the adjusted calories.
Carryover is an optional tracking convention, not a physiological measurement and not a recommendation to compensate for eating. Leave it off if a stable daily target is clearer, or if a lower next-day number encourages restriction, guilt, or an unhelpful cycle.
Worked example: from profile to displayed calorie target
This example demonstrates Food Focus arithmetic. It is not a recommendation for a real person and does not predict a rate of weight change.

Estimate resting energy
A 29-year-old female profile at 70 kg and 170 cm produces 1,456.5 kcal with the Mifflin–St Jeor equation, rounded within the app's calculation.

Add profile activity
With Apple Health off and “moderately active” selected, the app adds 600 kcal: 1,456.5 + 600 = 2,056.5 kcal.

Apply the selected goal
A moderate lose-weight pace subtracts 500 kcal: 2,056.5 − 500 = 1,556.5, which rounds to a saved base target of 1,557 kcal.

Apply carryover only if eligible and enabled
If yesterday's adjusted target was 1,557 kcal and the log totaled 1,757 kcal, the overage is 200 kcal. It is below the 623 kcal cap—40% of 1,557—so today's displayed target becomes 1,357 kcal when there is no current active-energy adjustment.
If Apple Health were connected, Food Focus would first recalculate the base in Apple Health mode and omit the 600 kcal profile activity allowance. It would then add the current-day active-energy value. Do not add Apple active energy to the 1,557 kcal profile-mode result by hand; those are two different calculation modes.
What are the limits of a calculated calorie target?
A target can organize a food log, but it cannot measure metabolism, absorption, body composition, training recovery, or future weight change. Errors can enter through the profile, the general activity category, wearable energy estimates, incomplete meal logging, portion estimates, and normal biological variation.
- The equation was developed in adults. This article is for general adult education, not for children or adolescents.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding require different guidance. The NIH Body Weight Planner likewise excludes pregnant and breastfeeding people from its adult planning information.
- Medical conditions and medication can change needs. A clinician or registered dietitian should set targets when intake is part of care.
- A product floor is not a personal safety determination. Food Focus cannot know that a displayed number is sufficient for you.
- Wearable active energy is estimated. It should not be treated as a laboratory measurement or an automatic instruction to eat more.
- Target weight is not a forecast. Food Focus does not use it to calculate a timeline or simulate expected weight change.
- Tracking should not cause harm. If calorie targets encourage severe restriction, bingeing, purging, compulsive exercise, or distress, stop using the target and seek qualified support.
The NIH planner explicitly limits its information to adults and excludes pregnancy and breastfeeding. It also presents calorie planning as an estimate with uncertainty, not medical advice. Use the same level of caution with Food Focus targets.
How should you use calorie and nutrient targets in Food Focus?
Begin with accurate profile information, choose an activity mode that matches how you want the product to calculate the base, and review the generated targets before saving them. The calorie, protein, fat, carbohydrate, fiber, added-sugar, and saturated-fat fields remain editable. If you connect Apple Health, expect the displayed calorie target to respond to available iPhone activity data while the saved base remains a separate number.

Questions about daily calorie targets
How does Food Focus calculate my daily calorie target?
For adults, Food Focus starts with Mifflin–St Jeor estimated resting energy, then applies either a selected profile-activity estimate or connected Apple Health energy data and adds the selected goal adjustment. The resulting target is editable and remains an estimate.
What activity levels does Food Focus use without Apple Health?
The current formula adds 200 kcal for sedentary, 400 for lightly active, 600 for moderately active, 800 for very active, or 1,000 for extra active. These are Food Focus product assumptions, not measured daily expenditure.
Why does my calorie goal change during the day?
When Apple Health is connected on iPhone, imported active calories are added to today's base target. If eligible Pro calorie carryover is enabled, yesterday's overage can be subtracted. Either adjustment can move the displayed target.
Should I eat back every active calorie from Apple Health?
Food Focus adds imported active calories one-for-one for display, but that is a product calculation—not a medical instruction to eat that exact amount. Wearable energy expenditure is estimated and can be wrong. Use longer trends and qualified guidance when precision matters.
How does calorie carryover work?
It is off by default, Pro-only, and available after at least 10 logged meals. When enabled for today, Food Focus checks only yesterday and subtracts the overage, capped at 40% of the base calorie target. Nothing carries over after an on-target or under-target day.
Does target weight change the calorie calculation?
Not directly in the current formula. Estimated calories use current weight. The average of current and target weight contributes to protein and fat calculations, but target weight does not create a projected timeline or directly alter the calorie target.
Can I edit the calculated targets?
Yes. Food Focus exposes calorie, protein, fat, carbohydrate, fiber, added-sugar, and saturated-fat targets for editing. A professionally established target can therefore replace the app's starting estimate.
