Photo, Barcode, Voice, Gallery, or Text: Which Food-Logging Method Fits the Meal?
The best food-logging method changes with the meal. A plated lunch, packaged snack, remembered recipe, and hands-busy breakfast do not contain the same kind of evidence.
Which food-logging method should you use?
Choose the input that already contains the most reliable information about the meal. A photo is often the fastest starting point for a plated meal; a barcode is usually more direct for a packaged product; text or voice is useful when you know details the camera cannot see; and a gallery image lets you log a photo after the meal. Every method still needs a review of the food and amount.

“Best” therefore means best for the evidence available now—not one input that wins for every meal. You can also combine a fast starting input with a correction: for example, photograph a plate, then add the oil or measured portion in words.
When should you log food by photo or gallery image?
Use a camera photo when the meal is in front of you and visible foods would take longer to list individually. Use a gallery image when you took the same kind of photo earlier and want to log later. The difference is timing: both routes ask an image to provide evidence about foods and portions.

When is a barcode the better food-logging method?
Start with a barcode when you ate a packaged product and the code is available. A successful scan can connect the code to a product-specific database record, avoiding the need to infer the brand and product from appearance. It does not measure how much you ate, and it does not prove that a community or database record matches the package in your hand.

Check the name, brand, flavor, size, and region against the package rather than trusting the code match automatically.

Determine whether the record is expressed per 100 grams, per serving, per item, or another basis, then compare it with the current label.

A correct product record still produces the wrong meal total when the logged quantity does not match your portion.
In Food Focus, a barcode lookup checks Open Food Facts first and uses USDA FoodData Central as a fallback where available. When should you use text or voice to log food?
Use text or voice when your knowledge of the meal is more informative than its appearance. Both can communicate ingredients, measured amounts, brands, preparation, and the portion you ate. Text is convenient when you want to inspect and edit the description before analysis; voice is useful when speaking is easier than typing.

Detail matters more than format. “Chicken salad” leaves the portion, dressing, toppings, and recipe unclear. “120 g grilled chicken, mixed greens, half an avocado, and 1 tablespoon vinaigrette” gives an estimator more relevant facts. With voice, review the interpreted foods and units before saving; with text, check that the description covers the amount you actually consumed.
What is the best way to log different kinds of meals?
These are starting points, not rigid rules. If another input contains better evidence for your meal, use it.

Repeated foods are still worth checking. In Food Focus, Food Memory can keep a current gram hint for a recognized, normalized ingredient and may supply it as context to a later ambiguous photo, text, or voice log. In the normal single-meal flow, newly saved grams replace the previous value; a manual edit can also set the current hint. It does not prove that today's serving is the same.
What should you review before saving any food log?
Each input fails in a different way: images can hide ingredients, barcodes can retrieve an outdated or regional record, and descriptions can omit details. A short review is more useful than assuming the starting method determines accuracy by itself.
- Food identity: Are the product, dish, and visible ingredients correct?
- Quantity and units: Does the amount describe what you ate—not merely a database serving?
- Preparation: Are oil, butter, breading, dressing, sauces, and cooking form represented where relevant?
- Missing or leftover food: Did the log include sides you ate and exclude food you left behind?
- Nutrition record: For packaged food, does the returned record agree with the current label?
If time is limited, correct the assumptions most likely to change the result: the amount, a calorie-dense ingredient, the wrong packaged product, or a hidden sauce or oil. Logging consistently does not require pretending uncertain inputs are exact.
How do the five logging methods work in Food Focus?
Food Focus lets you take a photo, choose a gallery image, scan a packaged-food barcode, speak a description, or type one. Photo, gallery, voice, and text inputs produce AI-assisted estimates. Barcode results begin with Open Food Facts or a USDA fallback; if a tracked nutrient field is missing, AI may estimate only that missing per-100-gram field. A barcode portion starts at 100 g or the last grams used for that exact code on the device, and the current flow accepts total grams rather than serving, piece, volume, or package-fraction controls. Its Health Index starts at a default zero, not the same AI assessment used for the other four inputs. In these in-app flows, you can review foods and portions before saving.
When a result needs correction, you can rename or remove ingredients and change grams during the normal pre-save review. After the meal is logged, Edit with AI can apply a typed or spoken instruction directly to that stored meal; it is a separate post-save action without a distinct preview or undo screen. When Food Memory is enabled, a standard single-meal save can update the current gram hint for recognized ingredients as possible context for a future ambiguous photo, text, or voice analysis. Questions about choosing a food-logging method
What is the best way to log food?
Use the input that contains the clearest evidence for the meal: photo for a visible plate, gallery when logging a saved image later, barcode for packaged food, and voice or text for known ingredients and amounts. The best method is the one you can review and correct consistently.
Is a barcode better than a food photo?
For packaged food, a correct barcode match usually provides a more product-specific starting record. A barcode does not measure the portion you ate, and the database entry can be missing, outdated, or different from the package in your hand, so check both product and serving size.
When should I use voice instead of a photo?
Voice is useful when your hands are busy or when you can quickly say facts the image cannot show, such as “two eggs cooked in one teaspoon of oil.” Review the transcription and detected amounts before saving.
Can I log a meal from a gallery photo later?
Yes. A gallery image lets you capture the meal now and log it later. The time delay can make hidden ingredients or amounts easier to forget, so add any recipe, sauce, or portion details you still know.
Should I use more than one food-logging method?
Yes. Real meals vary. You might scan a yogurt barcode, photograph a restaurant plate, and describe a homemade recipe by text. Consistency does not require forcing every meal through the same input.
